About
The Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT-NOVA) is a world-leading centre of excellence in global health and tropical medicine. For over a century, it has been committed to advancing science, shaping policy, and strengthening health systems worldwide. Through its Excellent-rated Global Health and Tropical Medicine (GHTM) research centre, IHMT drives interdisciplinary innovation at the intersection of infectious diseases, climate change, environmental health, and health inequalities.
Our work covers all areas of global health, from molecular and clinical research to public health, epidemiology, digital health, vector biology, health systems and policy. We integrate cutting-edge science with postgraduate education, capacity building, and long-term partnerships, particularly in Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa and Asia.
IHMT-NOVA generates evidence to inform national and international decision-making processes, delivers high-impact training to develop robust health workforces and provides specialised clinical and laboratory services to the community. As a WHO Collaborating Centre for Health Workforce Policy and Planning, we contribute to the development of equitable, sustainable and climate-resilient health systems.
With a history spanning over 120 years and a clear vision for the future, IHMT-NOVA/GHTM is a strategic partner in the transformation of global health through science, innovation and international collaboration.
