Skin tissue engineering and wound healing

About

We are working on a pre-vascularised skin construct comprising nanofibrous membranes, hydrogel matrices, subcutaneous adipose tissue-derived stem cells, and endothelial cells, dermal fibroblasts, and keratinocytes. These cells are matured and stratified at an air/liquid interface. This construct can be used to replace damaged skin tissue and as a model of skin for various (patho)physiological, pharmacological, and toxicological studies. It can also be developed further to model non-healing wounds or hypertrophic scars. In collaboration with materials engineers, we are also developing smart wound dressings that deliver bioactive molecules (e.g. plant-derived polyphenols, platelet lysate and growth factors) and/or skin and stem cells into wounds in the form of continuous cell sheets or spheroids.

We are looking for collaborators - material engineers who will provide us with approppriate scaffolds and matrices. We are also looking for clinical collaborators and companies to help us implement our newly developed constructs as skin replacements or as in vitro models for various tests.
