Osteochondral tissue engineering and bone implant coating

Scientist, Head of Laboratory of Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering at Institute of Physiology of the Czech Academy of Sciences

Prague, Czech Republic

About

We have a long-standing collaborative relationship with domestic material engineers, working together to develop various ceramic- or carbon-based coatings for metallic bone implants. These coatings are designed to modulate the degree of osseointegration and achieve antimicrobial activity. Examples of the materials used include oxides, zeolites, nanocrystalline diamond, MXenes, and nanosilver. We study the adhesion, growth, differentiation, viability, potential damage, and immune activation of cells on these coatings using static and dynamic cell culture systems. We are also developing our own vascularised bone tissue using porous scaffolds, mineralised hydrogels, stem cells, and an osteochondral interface model of endochondral ossification.

We are looking for collaborations with materials engineers who can provide appropriate scaffolds and with biologists who can help us address interference between pre-vascularization and osteogenic cell differentiation. We are also looking for clinical collaborators and companies to help us implement our newly developed constructs.
