About

CMMI – Center for Microscopy and Molecular Imaging (Belgium)

The Center for Microscopy and Molecular Imaging (CMMI) is an inter-university preclinical imaging platform serving both academic and industrial research communities. Jointly founded by the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and Université de Mons (UMONS) with support from the European Union and the Walloon Region (ERDF), CMMI is located at the Biopark Charleroi Brussels South in Belgium.

CMMI’s mission is to provide cutting-edge imaging services, and methodological support across the full preclinical workflow — from sample preparation and image acquisition to advanced analysis. Its multidisciplinary team offers state-of-the-art technologies and scientific know-how.

CMMI actively seeks to contribute its expertise by joining collaborative consortia, aiming to strengthen multidisciplinary projects at international levels. Through these partnerships, CMMI strives to deliver high-level scientific input and technological support in the imaging domains it covers.

The platform is structured around four major clusters:

  • In Vivo Imaging — PET/SPECT/CT, MRI, optical (BLI, FLI) and photoacoustic (MSOT) imaging for living models

  • Digital Image Analysis in Pathology (DIAPath) — histology, immunohistochemistry, and digital pathology workflows

  • Microscopy — electron, fluorescence, and advanced light microscopy

  • Multimodal Image Processing (MIP) — image processing, visualization, quantitative analysis, and data sharing
