Climate change and Health effects across Europe

Associate Professor at Ca' Foscari University of Venice

About

Despite the presence of several publications on this topic, I think that the question of how to estimate and anticipate the acute and longer-term effects of heat and compound climate exposures (heat × air pollution; heat × wildfire smoke; cold-to-heat transition anomalies; extreme precipitation/flood proxies) is not yet completely addressed. I want to share my expertise on a consortium that can touch on of the following research aims.

1. Harmonise methods and metrics for climate–health assessment at high spatial/temporal resolution, including compound-event indicators and vulnerability indices.
2. Quantify acute effects of extreme heat and compound exposures on daily mortality and emergency/hospital admissions.
3. Quantify longer-term burden from repeated/seasonal climatic stressors (e.g., cumulative heat load, multi-year trend shifts) using longitudinal designs.
4. Identify vulnerable groups and inequities (age, deprivation, urban form, occupational exposure; non-urban and special geographic contexts where available).
5. Build anticipatory risk models and scenario projections supporting preparedness (near-term warning and seasonal risk outlooks).
6. Translate evidence into policy-ready outputs (risk maps, adaptation options, best-practice guidance) and ensure sharing via the cluster and the European Climate and Health Observatory pathways.
