About
Opportunity: Digital Health & Biomarker Innovation for Sepsis Recovery
The Challenge
Sepsis recovery is a major clinical and health-economic challenge. Diverse causes, patient demographics, and outcomes make it difficult to identify which interventions truly benefit patients—especially after discharge.
Our Expertise
At VTT, we specialize in:
-
Patient health analytics
-
Wearable biosensors and scalable production
-
Immunoassay development
We partner with CSEM (Switzerland), leaders in:
-
Wearable health monitoring
-
Data acquisition and analytics
-
Next-generation biosampling using microneedles
We are looking for partners:
-
Clinical partners (ICU to home care)
-
Rehabilitation and psychological recovery specialists
-
Developers of micro-scale blood sampling technologies
-
-omics experts (genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics)
-
Biobanks with relevant patient/control material
Our Solution
A digital platform enabling continuous or periodic monitoring of physiological parameters at home using low-cost/disposable wearables. Data available to clinician to help in early interventions. Complementary features include:
-
Periodic biomarker analysis from blood (clinic, visiting nurse, or microvolume/dried blood spot sampling)
-
Digitalized patient-reported outcomes (recovery, cognitive status)
The platform can be standalone or integrated into national telehealth programs, serving as a recovery aid and remote monitoring solution.
Project Outline
Retrospective Study:
-
Validate a minimal set of immunological biomarkers for monitoring
-
Assess feasibility of measuring biomarkers from nonstandard samples
-
Identify physiological readouts that support recovery and train analytics algorithms for patient stratification
Prospective Study:
-
Collect data and samples from sepsis patients for up to 6 months post-onset
-
Evaluate feasibility of self-monitoring with wearables
-
Assess assisted/self-acquisition of blood samples
-
Analyze patient-specific trends in physiological and immunological markers to guide recovery and interventions
-
Refine data analytics for predictive insights
