Institute of Parasitology and Biomedicine ‘López-Neyra’ (IPBLN)

Internationalization Officer at CSIC - Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas

Granada, Spain

About

The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is the largest academic research-public organization in Spain. Affiliated to the Ministry of Science and Innovation and holding its own legal status, CSIC plays a leading role in shaping scientific and technological policy both nationally and internationally.

The Institute of Parasitology and Biomedicine ‘López-Neyra’ (IPBLN), within the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), focuses on biomedical research in immunology, molecular and cell biology, and pharmacology of diseases with global health impact.

Located at the Granada Health Technology Park (PTS), the IPBLN benefits from an environment that fosters collaboration across academia, industry, and healthcare sectors. It is organized into three departments: Cellular Biology & Immunology, Molecular Biology, and Biochemistry & Molecular Pharmacology.

IPBLN's research aims to understand biomedical processes, particularly in molecular parasitology, immunology, cancer and degenerative disorders, as well as the genetic background of these conditions and the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic tools. Focus areas include autoimmune diseases (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Crohn’s disease), neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis), infectious diseases (e.g., AIDS, hepatitis C, tropical diseases) and cancer (tumour biology, metastasis and anticancer therapies).

The Institute also plays a key educational role through PhD programs, specialization courses, and scientific outreach. It is active in international collaboration, especially with European and Latin American countries. Additionally, it provides scientific services such as DNA sequencing, proteomics, cytometry, microscopy, bioinformatics, and more.
