Energy engineering research at the University of Glasgow today focuses principally on the efficiency of energy generation, supply, conversion, transport, distribution and storage technologies.
Taking a pragmatic view of the rapidly-evolving energy sector globally and regionally – not least the ambitious ‘net zero’ emissions strategies being pioneered in Scotland – we address both development / deployment of renewables and the most responsible further uses of conventional energy resources as bridges to a sustainable future.
I am a Professor of Thermofluids and Head of the Energy and Sustainability Research Cluster within the Systems, Power & Energy (SPE) Research Division of the James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow. I recently held a prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng)/Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowship. I started as a Lecturer at the University of Glasgow in August 2003 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2013, Reader in 2017, and Professor in 2020. Prior to moving to Glasgow, I worked as a PDRA at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Imperial College London. In 2002, I received my PhD in Thermofluids from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Bath, UK. I have first-class degrees with distinctions and gold medals in both MSc (Applied Mathematics) and BSc honours (Mathematics) from the University of Dhaka in 1999 and 1997 respectively.
I am a Chartered Engineer (CEng), Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), and Member of the Engineering Professors’ Council, Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), UK Combustion Institute, and International Association of Engineers (IAENG).
I am currently serving as Impact & Sustainability Champion for SPE Research Division, Head of Energy and Sustainability Research Cluster and Head of James Watt Energy Lab. I have recently served as Deputy Head of Energy and Sustainability Research Group (2024 – 2025), Deputy Head of Mechanical Engineering Discipline (2016 – 2018), Convenor of School of Engineering IT Committee (2013 – 2018) and Member of the IT Strategy Committee of College of Science and Engineering, University of Glasgow.
Other External and Leadership Roles (Current/Recent): UK Representative Member of IEA Bioenergy Task 33 Biomass Gasification (2025 – ), Elected Executive Member of The British Section of the Combustion Institute (2024 – ), EDI Champion and Project Management Group of UKRI Supergen Bioenergy Impact Hub (2023 – ), UK Academic Lead of ABISURE Network (2023 – ), Hydrogen Theme Steering Committee of Energy Technology Partnership (ETP) (2022 – ), Leadership Group Member of ETP Heat Theme (2022 – ), Access Mentor of Royal Academy of Engineering (2021 – ), Directorate and Deputy of Scottish Carbon Capture & Storage (2019 – ), EPSRC College Member (2020 – ), Co-Leader of Turbulent Heat Transfer Group of EPSRC UK Fluids Network (2020 – ), External Examiner for MSc Programmes, Robert Gordon University (2018 – 2023).
