Integrated supply concepts for urban and industrial energy supply with a focus on heating and cooling.

Ingo Leusbrock

Head of department "Cities and Networks" at AEE INTEC

Gleisdorf, Austria

About

Cities, communities and municipalities are centres of our coexistence, but also centres of our energy consumption, where industries provide the economic backbone. More than 50% of the energy needed here is needed to provide heating and cooling for space heating, hot water and industrial processes. Our energy transition is therefore primarily a heating and cooling transition.

AEE INTEC develops, demonstrates and optimizes (among other topics) integrated supply concepts for urban and industrial energy supply with a focus on heating and cooling.

Simulations, intelligent data evaluation and spatial planning tools are valuable instruments that are constantly being further developed to meet the growing complexity of our energy system. In addition to digitization and (thermal) storage and generation technologies, the integration of other energy systems such as electricity and gas networks as well as infrastructures such as wastewater and mobility offer enormous potential for making a turnaround in heating and cooling technically, ecologically, economically and socially sustainable.
We can provide - next to input on the overall and scientific content of a project - demonstrators and use cases for these calls. One potential use case we can bring in is a complete region with 40+ municipalities including a) five DH companies, for which we currently plan a merger between all their grids, b) several industry partners with waste heat / process heat demand, c) an electrolyser + large-scale PV + biogas + methanization demonstrator and d) a number of energy communities in the development.
