Sustainable Phase Change Materials for Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Building Envelopes

Antonella Sarcinella

Researcher at University of Salento

About

Phase Change Materials (PCMs) are promising solutions for improving the thermal energy storage capacity of buildings. They absorb and release heat during phase changes, helping to maintain indoor thermal comfort and reduce energy demand for heating and cooling. Traditionally, PCMs are produced from petroleum-based compounds, which raises environmental and sustainability concerns.

This project proposes the development and integration of bio-based or low-impact PCMs into building materials, focusing on mortars, plasters, and coatings used in the building envelope. The main goal is to create eco-friendly, energy-responsive materials that enhance the passive thermal regulation of buildings without compromising their mechanical or aesthetic properties.

The research will explore natural or recycled PCM sources, compatibility with traditional and innovative binders, and the durability and efficiency of the composite systems. The expected outcomes include reduced energy consumption, improved indoor comfort, and lower carbon footprint for both new and existing buildings.
