About

Hochschule Mittweida University of Applied Sciences was founded in 1840 and is a strong centre for research and transfer services in central Saxony with about 7,000 students in 5 faculties. The many facets of its industry-oriented research and development includes third-party funded investigation and exploration, cooperative PhD projects and independently organized development works as well as projects in institutes and research associations.

The research team in smart materials specializes in ML for materials science, focusing on microstructure characterization, quantitative image analysis, computer vision, semantic segmentation, defect detection, & structure–property relationships. We extract quantitative data from complex experiments & develop explainable, physics-informed AI. This enables AI-driven closed-loop experimentation via automated image interpretation, real-time experimental analysis, & uncertainty-aware modeling for adaptive decision-making in autonomous lab workflows.
