About
The University of Coimbra (UC) was named the top national university in six of 11 subject areas in the 2025 THE World University Rankings by Subject, including Social Sciences, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences. In other areas such as Engineering and Computer Science, it remains among the world’s best, ranking in the global top 400 to 600. Founded during the Pombaline reform and established from the outset as a school of science, the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC) is one of the 8 faculty belong to UC that is actively engaged in research and teaching. Its work is conducted across 24 internationally recognized Research and Development (R&D) units, in close collaboration with industry and society to drive innovation. FCTUC has approximately 8,600 students, 600 faculty members, and 200 researchers. As an interdisciplinary faculty, it conducts both fundamental and applied research across a wide range of fields, including chemistry, engineering and process science, physics, mathematics, materials science, life and natural sciences, geoscience, informatics, computer and systems science, space and earth sciences, environmental and transport studies, climate change and energy, construction, robotics, communications, and social sciences.
