About
Surface functionalization of 2D materials using ion beam implantation and chemical etching to enhance the sensitivity and reactivity.
2D materials such as graphene and TMDCs are ideal platforms for tunable sensing surfaces. We work with monolayers, ultrathin films, and nanosheets to maximize surface exposure. Ion beam implantation enables controlled defect creation and depth-selective modification. Targeted doping introduces active sites and tailors charge transfer and band structure. Chemical etching generates edge-rich morphologies and increases surface reactivity. Defect density is tuned to balance sensitivity with electrical stability and noise. Functional groups can be anchored at vacancies, edges, and grain boundaries for selectivity. These engineered surfaces enhance adsorption kinetics and improve signal-to-background ratios. Approaches are compatible with scalable thin-film processing and device integration. Applications include gas/chemical sensors, biosensing interfaces, and catalytic reaction studies.
