FARM2FORK-05: agri-food by-products for pig feeding systems

Director - Europe Department at Acta - Les Instituts techniques agricoles

Paris, France

About

IFIP – Institut du Porc is the French Pork Institute and the national technical reference body for the pig production sector. It conducts applied R&D activities in close connection with industry stakeholders (farmers, cooperatives, feed manufacturers, processors), with strong expertise in pig nutrition, sustainability, economic modelling, and digital tools.

IFIP is willing to join a consortium to support the development of circularity and diversification strategies in terrestrial livestock systems, with a focus on integrating agri-food by-products into pig feeding systems.

1. Valorisation of Agri-food By-products

IFIP can contribute to the characterization and integration of diverse by-products (liquid, moist, or dry materials) into pig diets. This includes nutritional assessments, technical feasibility at farm or feed mill level, and the development of technical sheets and decision-support tools for users.

2. Multi-objective Feed Formulation

IFIP collaborates with INRAE on advanced feed formulation methods that simultaneously optimize cost, environmental impact (GHG, land, water), and protein autonomy. These approaches are designed to be embedded in practical tools usable by farmers and feed advisors.

3. Artificial Intelligence for Feed Ingredient Assessment

IFIP is involved in a submitted national project (AI4Diet) aiming to use AI to predict the nutritional value of emerging feed ingredients and by-products. This would reduce the need for costly digestibility trials and support anticipatory strategies in feed innovation.

4. Environmental Assessment of Feeding Strategies

IFIP has strong expertise in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of pig production systems and participates in the ECOALIM database. It can contribute to evaluating and comparing the environmental performance of conventional vs. circular feeding scenarios.

5. Economic Diversification and Resilience

IFIP can assess the economic impacts of by-product use in pig diets, including feed cost effects, resilience of on-farm feed manufacturing (FAF), and market dependency reduction. It also investigates technical and economic barriers to the adoption of diversified feeding practices.

6. European Benchmark and Knowledge Transfer

IFIP can contribute to cross-country comparisons regarding the use of by-products in livestock feeding, identifying best practices and success conditions at European level. It also supports user-oriented communication and transfer of innovations.
