About

The Environmental Technologies & Circular Bioeconomy unit of BETA Technological Center (https://betatechcenter.com/) is seeking to join a consortium preparing a proposal for HORIZON-CL6-2026-02-FARM2FORK-05: Boosting circularity and diversification strategies of terrestrial livestock production systems, specifically in Area B: Production system on the wool value chain. At the core of this unit’s activity is the design, development and optimisation of biological and physico-chemical processes for treatment, recovery and valorisation of solid, liquid and gaseous waste, with a special focus on agri-food systems and livestock sectors. The unit applies a circular bioeconomy and biorefinery approach, combining multiple technologies in cascades to maximise resource recovery and move toward zero-waste solutions. Main recovered products include nutrients (e.g., nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium), reclaimed water, energy (e.g., biogas) and other high-value materials derived from waste streams. This expertise is highly relevant to the wool value chain, where opportunities exist to transform wool and associated livestock by-products into sustainable materials and circular resources. BETA can contribute to the environmental and systems-level assessment of wool production, including the evaluation of waste streams from shearing, processing and livestock operations, identification of valorisation pathways, and optimisation of integrated treatment processes that recover nutrients, fibres and energy while improving environmental performance. The unit’s capability with established and innovative technologies—such as anaerobic digestion, composting, membrane processes, cryoconcentration and solid-state fermentation—enables the development of tailored solutions across the value chain. Beyond technological development, BETA can support circular value-chain design and sustainability assessments that balance environmental, economic and social considerations, ensuring the proposed innovations are viable, scalable and aligned with Farm to Fork and circular bioeconomy objectives. The unit’s track record in agri-food-focused circular innovation and waste recovery makes it well suited to contribute as a consortium partner to strategic research, technology development, pilot demonstration and knowledge transfer activities within a multi-actor European project. Projects related to this area of expertise include GREENHOOD, FERTIMANURE, AGRI-BIOCIRCLAR-HUB, I3-4-BIOFERTILIZERS.
