Green Transition Food Processing Africa Enabling sustainable farming systems
associate researcher at INRAT
tunis, Tunisia
About
This project aims to develop a zero-waste, climate-friendly value chain for a selected African crop by fully valorizing all parts of the plant during and after food processing. The initiative focuses on transforming the primary product for food markets while converting by-products—such as peels, leaves, husks, and processing residues—into valuable secondary products like animal feed, compost, biofertilizers, biochar, and energy sources.
By promoting circular economy principles, the project will reduce agricultural waste, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, and improve soil health. It will also create new income opportunities for farmers, processors, and rural youth. Through training, green technologies, and partnerships with local cooperatives, the project strengthens sustainable farming systems and supports Africa’s green transition in the agri-food sect
