Expertise in Circular Construction Materials and Ceramic Waste Valorisation

We are seeking partners and consortia to collaborate in the call HORIZON-CL6-2027-01-CIRCBIO-02: Enhancing ecodesign and circularity of construction products.
Our research cluster, formed by the CECOM and TECASOS groups, offers strong expertise for Horizon Europe consortia, particularly those focused on ecodesign, circularity, and sustainable construction materials. Our work centers on transforming ceramic industry waste into high-performance, low-carbon construction materials, contributing directly to the green transition and circular economy goals.

We develop innovative solutions by incorporating ceramic waste—such as polishing sludge and recycled aggregates—into new sustainable concretes and alternative binders, significantly reducing reliance on traditional Portland cement and its associated CO₂ emissions. Our studies deliver robust data on the mechanical, thermal, and durability performance of these next-generation materials, supporting EU research priorities in climate mitigation and advanced sustainable materials.

Our approach is fully aligned with Horizon Europe priorities, especially those addressing circular resource use, industrial decarbonisation, and advanced materials for a more sustainable construction industry. We also contribute to industrialised and efficient construction practices through the design and optimisation of prefabricated elements with reduced environmental impact and improved energy efficiency.

With a multidisciplinary team spanning materials science, structural engineering, and environmental sciences, we provide integrated, technology-driven and sustainability-oriented solutions. This enables us to address challenges from a holistic perspective and deliver high-impact contributions to collaborative R&I projects.

Our work also creates clear economic and social value. By promoting ceramic waste reuse—particularly relevant in Castellón (Spain), which generates over 102,000 tonnes/year of reusable ceramic waste—we support circular business models, reduce waste-management costs, and stimulate local innovation and employment.

Aligned with SDGs 11, 12, and 13, we help minimise the construction sector’s environmental footprint and offer industry partners practical knowledge and tools to adopt more sustainable practices.
