Fabian Fischer, HES-SO professor, leads research on MFC scale-up, phosphate recovery, and sustainable bioeconomy for next-gen waste to product solutions.
HES-SO is a network of 28 schools of higher education offering degree programs in six key fields to approximately 21,000 students. Our university plays an important role in the social, economic, and cultural development in Western Switzerland. A primary mission is to foster applied research, development, innovation, and creation – to address our society’s needs and resolve most pressing challenges.
Fabian Fischer, currently a Full Professor at HES de Suisse occidentale (HES-SO). His current achievements include the development of a 1000-liter microbial fuel cell (MFC) stack that addresses voltage reversals, as well as the combination of non-biological simulations and metagenomic analyses. This MFC was successfully used in field experiments and featured in media coverage, including a TV documentary. Furthermore, our lab made a significant contribution to the field of phosphate recovery from sewage sludge using microbial electrolysis cells, scaling up the process and implementing the pilot system in three wastewater treatment plants. The work in this area has been the subject of coverage in the Swiss press, on national television and in peer-reviewed journals. The expertise offers a valuable opportunity for those interested in the next generation wastewater treatment, biorefining, biophotovoltaics and biosynthesis. We propose innovative research in microbial fuel cell scale-up and environmental sustainability and cyclic bioeconomy.
