I am a senior researcher at the Spanish National Research Council (ICM-CSIC). I earned my Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Barcelona in 1998, with a thesis focused on the metabolism of benthic feeders, using in situ incubation chambers to study gorgonian species, sponges, and ascidians.
Following my Ph.D., I completed postdoctoral research at the Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology, where I investigated the ecological importance of picoplankton in coral reefs and the role of hydrodynamics in nutrient acquisition.
In 2001, I was awarded the prestigious "Ramón y Cajal" contract, which led to a tenure-track position at the Institute of Marine Sciences in Barcelona. I became a permanent staff member in 2007.
