Prof. As. Dr. Laura GJYLI currently holds the title of associate professor. In 2014 she defended her PhD from the University of Tirana in the field of plant biotechnology, contributing to the identification of the presence of cyanobacterial species, for the first time in Albanian marine waters, based on the PCR amplification of 16-23S ribosomal DNA sequences.
Dr. GJYLI is part of the founding staff of University "Aleksandër Moisiu" Durrës, the newest public university in Albania, where she teaches biology and microbiology courses. She is engaged in research work related to water quality assessment, recently marine litter and riverine litter on the Albanian coastline, including Erzen and Ishëm River. She gives her contribution to the education of Albanian youth as the coordinator and creator of BioloveAlbaniaGroup that started in 2018 with high school volunteers, students, teachers and professors from the coastal city of Durres to clean and study macro-plastics at the Albanian coast. From June 2020, she is initiator and coordinator of the voluntary movement RiverCleanupAlbania / CleanIshëmRiver (inspired by the River-Cleanup.org, Belgium), coordinating activities, developing partnerships and public relations in Albania, beginning with first project –River Cleanup Ishëm. Mission is to clean up rivers and riverbanks, generate awareness and inform, based on three pillars: 1. Cleaning with people and technology; 2. Education with schools and universities; 3. Transformation of companies and the government; to inspire people’s behaviour change. The Ishëm River is the most polluted river in Europe, dumping over 733,000 kg of plastic into the Adriatic Sea every year. Because of their influence and expertise, the right project partners are essential. From December 2022, one of these partners is the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna (BOKU), where Prof. Dr. Gjyli is the Albanian coordinator of MaPIshëm “Macroplastic transport measurements in the Ishëm River, the most polluted river in Europe”, a project part of the programme of joint research-scientific projects within the Agreement for Scientific and Technological Cooperation between the Republic of Albania and Austria, financed by AKKSHI. From September 2021, it is a member of the network of historic cities against plastic waste (HISCAP), as part of BIO-PLASTICS EUROPE. Prof. As. Dr. Gjyli is a member of the ParAqua project "Applications for zoosporic parasites in aquatic systems" (ParAqua) CA20125, representing "Aleksandër Moisiu" Durrës University. In 2024, she is the coordinator at UAMD of the projects: "Blue Circle" an EU-funded interrag project, where UAMD is an associate partner of the Durrës Regional Council, and "Environmental protection through integrated waste management in the Municipality of Durrës", where UAMD is a partner of Durres Municipality.
