Smoke products based on natural actives to ensure biosecurity in food industry, sea containers, poultry and animal welfare.
About
Project Cooperation Opportunity – Cluster 6: Biosecurity Innovation through Natural Fumigants
Title:
Smoke-based Bioprotection: Natural Fumigant Products for Biosecurity and Animal Welfare in the Food Chain
Objective:
We seek international cooperation within Cluster 6 of Horizon Europe ("Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment") to co-develop and pilot natural fumigant products aimed at enhancing biosecurity, hygiene, and animal welfare in key sectors of the food chain—specifically in poultry production, animal husbandry, sea containers, and food processing facilities.
Concept & Innovation:
The project focuses on eco-compatible fumigants based on natural active substances (e.g., essential oils, botanical extracts) to eliminate pathogenic microorganisms (e.g., Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria) and reduce chemical residue risks in critical environments. These solutions are designed for dry, non-corrosive application in closed systems, providing a residual bioprotective effect without harmful emissions—fully aligned with Green Deal objectives and One Health principles.
Target Application Sectors:
Poultry farms and hatcheries
Animal housing in livestock operations
Food transport via sea containers
Agro-industrial processing units
Expected Impacts:
Improved animal welfare through pathogen control and reduced ammonia/CO₂ levels
Decreased use of synthetic biocides and formaldehyde-based products
Contribution to antimicrobial resistance mitigation
Enhanced traceability and sanitation compliance in the agri-food chain
Partnership Sought:
We invite:
Research institutes specialized in veterinary public health and microbiology
Agri-tech SMEs and startups with biocide innovation capacity
Operators in poultry, livestock, or food logistics sectors
Policy stakeholders in biosecurity regulation
