CL6-2025-01-CIRCBIO-08: Seeking Research Partner for EU Proposal – Bioinformatics Expertise in Lipase Gene Mining
About
Project concept
Lipases are versatile biocatalysts with applications across multiple sectors including food, biofuels, pharmaceuticals, and waste valorization. However, industrial applications often require specific enzymatic properties (e.g., higher stability, altered substrate specificity, resistance to solvents or temperature), which are not always present in natural enzymes. Our project aims to identify novel lipase candidates from genomic databases, characterize them in silico, and use them as a starting point for protein engineering and optimization.
Partner profile sought
We are looking for a research group or academic institution with the following capabilities:
Expertise in bioinformatics, metagenomics, and genome mining, particularly in navigating and extracting data from large genomic repositories such as:
-
NCBI GenBank
-
EMBL-EBI ENA
-
JGI IMG
-
Other relevant specialized databases
Proven experience in:
-
Identifying genes encoding specific enzymatic functions (ideally lipases or esterases)
-
Applying search filters to define and extract genes with specific characteristics (e.g., sequence motifs, structure-function predictions, environmental origin)
-
Performing in silico characterization of enzymatic properties (e.g., thermostability prediction, domain analysis, homology modeling)
-
Familiarity with machine learning tools or bioinformatic pipelines for enzyme function prediction will be considered a plus.
