HORIZON-JU-CBE-2025-RIA-01 Valorisation of untapped forest biomass
Assistant Professor at Institute of Agricultural and Food Biotechnology – State Research Institute (IBPRS-PIB)
Warsaw, Poland
About
An approach to valorizing untapped forest biomass is to extract highly valuable compounds from pine and birch bark. Extracts rich in polyphenols, sterols, terpenes, and other nutritionally and pharmacologically essential compounds could be used as nutraceuticals and functional food ingredients with anticancer, and antioxidative properties.
Pine and birch barks from different parts of Europe could be analyzed for their chemical composition and properties.
IBPRS contribution to this topic:
- Laboratory-scale green extractions of pine and birch bark
- Extracts’ composition analysis
- Safety analysis (heavy metals, pesticide residues, mycotoxins)
- Cytotoxicity and anticancer properties
- Antibacterial properties
- Antioxidative properties in food matrices
