About

2D Food – Integrated Food Traceability System Using 2D Codes

The 2D Food project aims to develop and implement a global traceability system for food products based on 2D codes, ensuring full transparency and authenticity throughout the entire supply chain – from production to consumption. The initiative focuses on reducing food waste, combating fraud, and improving supply chain efficiency through the use of advanced technologies.

Key elements of the project include:

  • Mandatory use of 2D codes on all unit food packaging;

  • Digital traceability from farm to fork;

  • Integration of ADC/AIDC technologies for automatic data capture;

  • Implementation of digital twins to simulate and optimize business processes;

  • Use of AI for data analysis, demand forecasting, and inventory optimization;

  • Assessment of consumer perception and behavioral impact;

  • Collaboration with charitable organizations to redistribute near-expiry products more effectively.

The project will deliver an integrated hardware-software system for 2D code management, a consumer mobile application, AI-driven analytics tools, digital process models, and practical recommendations for industry adoption.

2D Food supports the European Green Deal, the Farm to Fork Strategy, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals by promoting transparency, reducing waste, and fostering responsible consumption. It also strengthens innovation in European SMEs and enhances the competitiveness of the EU food sector through standardization and digital transformation.
