BARMM PALM OIL OPPORTUNITIES PRESENTATION
BOARD SECRETARY VI at BANGSAMORO BOARD OF INVESTMENTS
Philippines
About
The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao stands on the cusp of an agricultural transformation, anchored by the vast potential of oil palm development. Industry groups such as the Philippine Palm Oil Development Council have identified approximately 800,000 hectares of arable land across the region ideally suited for plantations. This abundance of fertile terrain offers a powerful pathway to revitalize rural economies and reshape the region's agricultural landscape.
For local farmers and agrarian reform cooperatives, the shift toward oil palm cultivation translates to a profound economic uplift. Traditional coconut farming yields modest returns, but oil palm can produce an average of 3.8 metric tons per hectare—more than triple the output of copra. Established ventures like those managed by DALG Agro-Industrial Corp. and DALG Oil Palm Corp. in Wao, Lanao del Sur, alongside expanding operations involving processors like Kenram Palmoil Industries in Basilan, demonstrate how private sector partnerships can reliably boost household incomes and generate steady local employment.
On a national scale, scaling up production within BARMM directly addresses a critical structural deficit. The Philippines currently imports more than a million metric tons of palm oil annually, primarily from Indonesia and Malaysia. Cultivating BARMM's untapped acreage strengthens domestic food security and reduces import dependency. To accelerate this growth, the Bangsamoro Board of Investments actively champions agribusiness ventures by providing attractive fiscal incentives, while regional events like the BARMM Investment and Trade Forum and international initiatives like the EU-backed BAEP-CRESCENT program work to seamlessly connect investors with local farming communities. Ultimately, this industrial expansion moves forward hand-in-hand with a commitment to sustainable land stewardship, ensuring that economic progress preserves the region's rich ecological heritage.
