About
Future Retail and Empathetic Space at the Extreme
SHOW UP 2026 / Himalaya Living Lab is a research-led design, technology, and brand collaboration situated in Basong Village, Dingri County, Tibet, at an altitude of over 4,200 metres and approximately 43 km from Mount Everest Base Camp. The project proposes a new model for future outdoor retail: not simply a shop, exhibition, or sponsorship platform, but a high-altitude living laboratory where brand experience, real-world product testing, spatial research, digital technology, cultural engagement, and physical prototyping converge within one extreme environment.
At the heart of the project is a simple proposition: rather than bringing a brand to Everest as a marketing exercise, the project enables the brand to truly “show up” in the place where its values, technologies, and products are put to the test. Basong Village provides conditions that no conventional urban flagship store can reproduce. Extreme weather, altitude, mountain journeys, equipment use, local culture, and community life together constitute an observable real-world environment in which products, behaviours, spatial experiences, and technological systems can be tested simultaneously.
From Future Retail to a High-Altitude Living Lab
The project responds to a transformation in China's outdoor market from predominantly functional consumption toward experience, identity, lifestyle, and community. Within this context, technical credibility remains essential, but becomes the starting point for a much broader relationship between brand and user. The project therefore asks how an outdoor brand can move beyond selling equipment to create a meaningful ecosystem connecting product performance, place, knowledge, culture, community, and experience.
SHOW UP structures this relationship as a continuous journey:
EXPLORE → PREPARE → ARRIVE → TEST → AMPLIFY
The journey can begin in an urban flagship store or digital platform, continue through pre-expedition preparation and equipment selection, reach the Himalaya Living Lab for cultural immersion and field testing, and subsequently return to cities through digital twins, exhibitions, membership programmes, and new content. In this way, the project transforms a conventional linear marketing relationship into a recurring content–place–data–community loop.
The physical Living Lab is envisioned as a hybrid environment incorporating a Gear Testing Terrace, a Mountain Culture Archive, a Digital Twin Portal, and a Modular Expedition Pod. Importantly, this is conceived not as an isolated building but as a prototype capable of moving between mountain and city: parts of the experience can subsequently be reproduced through modular installations, touring exhibitions, flagship-store interfaces, and digital environments.
Project Vision
Ultimately, SHOW UP proposes that the future of premium outdoor retail may no longer be defined primarily by the store.
Instead, retail can become a distributed system connecting extreme landscapes, scientific research, product development, cultural knowledge, human experience, AI, digital twins, advanced manufacturing, physical construction, and global communities.
The Himalaya Living Lab therefore operates at three scales simultaneously: a real place where people and equipment encounter extreme conditions; a digital and research platform through which knowledge is accumulated and transformed into design intelligence; and a transferable prototype capable of returning to cities through flagship stores, exhibitions, modular installations, and digital environments.
For an outdoor brand, the proposition is consequently larger than visibility near Mount Everest. It is an opportunity to participate in the creation of a living research infrastructure in which brand values are tested through real conditions, translated into knowledge, materialised through design and making, and subsequently communicated to a global audience.
