About
This solution is an IoT and cloud-based platform for device-level power quality (PQ) monitoring, diagnosis and control in microgrids, industrial and building environments, supporting the transition towards grid-interactive efficient buildings. Each apparatus or distributed energy resource is equipped with a control device that acquires detailed electrical waveforms, computes PQ indicators and detects anomalies locally, providing a highly granular view of the electrical behaviour of the system. Devices can operate autonomously, acting directly on the associated load, or be managed collectively through a cloud platform and an Energy Management System (EMS) to prevent faults, mitigate disturbances and coordinate flexibility services.
The platform runs on a FIWARE-based cloud architecture with advanced, data-driven analytics for continuous monitoring, storage and processing of PQ and operational data. It can build trends, profiles and forecasts, and detect or even anticipate a broad spectrum of electrical disturbances, far beyond traditional metering solutions. Custom alarm rules can be configured, for example according to standards such as IEEE 1547, enabling early detection of anomalies and informed operational decisions.
Smart appliances and control devices can respond either autonomously or under OpenADR-based automated demand response schemes, combining PQ-aware operation with grid support and demand flexibility. The platform integrates smoothly with EMS and microgrid controllers, allowing coordinated actions such as load shedding, reconfiguration or flexibility activation while preserving power quality. Several experimental case studies in microgrid setups demonstrate its ability to improve reliability, resilience and efficiency and to support the evolution towards the digital utility paradigm.
