Trailer Sauna Hokuto

In March 2025, I collaborated with master Japanese craftsmen to create a world-first: a trailer sauna built entirely from the straight-grain ("Masame") and heartwood ("Akami") of premium Japanese cedar.

"Masame" refers to the straight-grain cut, where the wood fibers run perfectly parallel like natural straws. In Japan, this cut has traditionally been used for "Ohitsu" (wooden rice containers) because of its incredible breathing ability: it releases moisture when the air is dry and absorbs it when humid. In a sauna, it acts as a natural climate control system, maintaining the perfect balance.

In addition to the grain, this sauna is built exclusively using "Akami"—the rich, mature heartwood from the very center of the cedar tree.

While the outer wood ("Shirata") contains nutrients that attract termites and moisture, the dense heartwood is naturally resistant to pests and decay. In Japan, Akami is prized as a premium, highly durable luxury material. By using only this elite part of the wood, we ensure our sauna delivers unmatched longevity and a rich, natural aroma.
