Secretaria de Estado de Saúde de Minas Gerais
About
The Minas Gerais State Health Secretariat (SES/MG) is the state government body responsible for public health in Minas Gerais. Its purpose is to formulate the State Health Policy and its guidelines, in accordance with the principles of the Unified Health System (SUS).
SES/MG coordinates 28 Regional Health Units and oversees, through institutional affiliation, three foundations: Hemominas (hematology and hemotherapy), Funed (Ezequiel Dias Foundation), and Fhemig (Minas Gerais State Hospital Foundation).
Social oversight and community participation are ensured through the State Health Council (CES) and the Bipartite Inter-managers Commission (CIB).
Among its recent initiatives, highlights include the expansion of the Newborn Screening Test (Teste do Pezinho) to cover 64 diseases across all 853 municipalities in the state, the "Carreta Saúde Mais Perto" ("Healthcare Closer to You") mobile unit project to bring medical consultations and diagnostic services to the population, and innovative dengue control measures using Wolbachia technology.
The secretariat's mission is to transform the way public health is conceived and delivered in Minas Gerais, with the vision of "Making the ideal SUS a reality" and core values of transparency, humanization, citizen focus, and evidence-based decision-making.
SES/MG has also been committed to structuring and strengthening the hospital network throughout the state. Since 2007, the secretariat has been leading a Regional Hospitals implementation project, whose main objective is to meet the suppressed demand for hospital beds, reduce the concentration of care in the Central region, and decentralize the provision of elective surgeries to the state's interior. Given the project's financial complexity, the government has sought creative solutions and collaboration from multiple stakeholders, with the expectation that the regional hospitals will become financially self-sustaining.
Within the broader hospital policy framework, the Valora Minas program stands out — in 2024, it benefited more than 300 hospitals with transfers exceeding BRL 1.2 billion, in addition to BRL 60 million invested specifically in structuring the hospital care network. The program includes modules focused on elective surgeries (Opera Mais), long-term care units, and Regional Hospitals, as well as projects to strengthen care pathways for stroke, acute myocardial infarction (AMI), trauma, and burn injuries. Another highlight is the Hospital Padre Eustáquio Health Complex, developed in partnership between Seinfra, Codemge, Fhemig, and Funed, funded through the Reparation Agreement stemming from the Vale dam collapse in Brumadinho, and announced as the most modern public health facility in the country.
