PPWR conpliant blister packs for health supplements
Senior International Manager at Food & Bio Cluster Denmark

About
The solutions which include packing materials with certain barrier capabilities in terms of WVTR and oxygen, and compliance to EU food contact material regulation), such as hard gel size 0 and 00 capsules as well as soft gelatin oval 10 to oblong 20.
In the EU, the upcoming Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) will replace the previous directive structure (e.g. Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive). The goal is that all packaging placed on the EU market must be recyclable in an economically sustainable manner by 1 January 2030 at the latest.
“Recyclable” means, among other things: the packaging must be designed for recycling, can be collected separately, can be sorted, and can actually be recycled on a large scale using existing or realistic technologies.
To meet “designed for recycling”, the packaging should consist of materials that are easy to separate or – even better – consist of mono-material (one type of plastic or one type of material) or materials compatible with existing recycling systems.
This will pose certain challenges to the packaging of food supplements, which are traditionally packed in blisters with alu+PVC/PVDC and/or in jars with closure not consisting of mono-materials.
