Hidromel Urucum da Amazônia

Founder & Investor at Urucum Hidromel

Belém, Brazil

About

The story of Hidromel Urucum da Amazonia is a liquid chronicle of the world’s largest rainforest, captured through a rare partnership between ancient flora and tiny, stingless guardians.

The Origin: The Melipona Bee

Unlike traditional meads made from the honey of the Africanized honeybee (Apis mellifera), this elixir begins with the Melipona, or stingless bee. These native bees are the true custodians of the Amazon.

The Honey:* Melipona honey is thinner, more acidic, and exponentially more complex than commercial honey. Because these bees forage on specific deep-jungle orchids and resinous trees, their honey carries an electric floral profile.

The Symbiosis:* These bees are essential for the pollination of the Urucum (Annatto) shrubs. By using honey from the very bees that tend to the Urucum, we create a product with a biological terroir that cannot be replicated anywhere else on Earth.

The Infusion: Urucum (Annatto)

Urucum is known as the flame of the forest. Indigenous tribes have used these seeds for millennia as sacred body paint and medicine. In our mead, the Urucum serves two purposes:

1. *Visual:* It provides a breathtaking, translucent ruby-red color.

2. *Flavor:* It anchors the sweetness of the honey with an earthy, slightly smoky, and peppery finish that lingers on the palate.

The Craft: Production Process

Creating this beverage is a patient exercise in slow fermentation:

1. *Harvesting:* Honey is extracted via syringe-like tools to protect the delicate wax pots of the stingless bee colonies.

2. *The Must:* The honey is diluted with pure Amazonian spring water. No boiling is involved, preserving the natural enzymes and wild yeasts.

3. *Maceration:* Dry Urucum seeds are added during the primary fermentation, allowing the alcohol to gently extract the pigment and the subtle tannins from the seed coat.

4. *Aging:* The mead is aged in Amburana wood barrels. This native Brazilian wood adds notes of cinnamon and vanilla, rounding out the sharp acidity of the Melipona honey.

The Tasting Experience

Nose:* Intense aromas of wild white flowers, damp earth, and a hint of toasted spice.

Palate:* A surprising burst of tartness followed by a silky, resinous sweetness.

Finish:* Clean and dry, with a warm, peppery glow from the Urucum that cleanses the palate.

The European Expansion: A New Frontier

Bringing Hidromel Urucum to Europe is more than a commercial venture; it is an invitation to a sensory revolution.

Why Europe?

The European market has a deep-rooted appreciation for heritage beverages—from the meads of Scandinavia to the fine wines of France and Italy. However, the continent has never tasted a mead with the high acidity and medicinal complexity of the Amazonian Melipona.

Strategic Positioning

The Eco-Luxury Segment:* We are positioning this as a premium, limited-edition spirit. Each bottle supports the reforestation of Urucum and the preservation of native bee species, appealing to the European green consumer.

Gastronomy:* We aim to introduce this to Michelin-starred restaurants in London, Paris, and Berlin as a unique pairing for game meats, aged cheeses, or even dark chocolate desserts.

Cultural Bridge:* By drinking Hidromel Urucum, the European consumer is directly contributing to the Standing Forest economy, proving that the Amazon is worth more alive and producing than cleared for cattle.

This is not just mead. It is the blood of the forest, bottled for the world.
