Innovative scalable flow reactors

Due to his proven advantages, flow chemistry is continuing to cement its position in academia and industry. However, despite over a decade of R&D efforts, some challenges remain in the areas handling of multiphase processes, alternative energy input and scale-up.

Therefore, a platform reactor technology (i.e., COSTA™ Technology) has been developed featuring the arrangement of static mixing elements in a linear process channel combined with an oscillatory flow regime. The synergetic combination of reactor geometry and pulsatile flow results in a plug flow behaviour with intense mixing regardless of the net flow rate and excellent thermoregulation.

Several reactor types were built on this platform technology which can be linearly scaled, as critical process characteristics, such as mass- and energy-transfer, residence time distribution and pressure drop, are not affected.

The technology has a sound basis of scientific publications in high-level journals and has been industrially embraced by top multinational pharma and chemical companies.
