The EOS Centre is a social science research centre at UCLouvain. Its aim is to study environmental transformations - in both the North and South - from the perspective of the humanities and social sciences. The mission of the EOS centre is to advance research and international cooperation, while contributing to public debates on future environmental and social challenges.
The centre cuts across conventional academic divisions - be they institutional, disciplinary or methodological. Faced with the urgency of socio-environmental crises, the uncertainties they generate, the complexity of the subject and the diversity of the values and narratives at stake, the centre's work is rooted in plural and collaborative research approaches, through inter- and trans-disciplinary research projects and experimental methodological approaches focused on social change.
Created in 2024, the EOS centre aims to become a multi-institute, multi-site centre. The centre complements several other initiatives within UCLouvain, such as the UCLouvain Transition Plan (2021-2026) and the Portes de la Transition project, the Interdisciplinary Research Group on the Ecological Crisis and Transition (GRICE) and the Louvain Partnership Research on Ecological and Social Transition (LPTransition) platform. The EOS centre leads the cross-disciplinary research group Ecological and Social Transitions.
