SYNAPSE SSA/SDA Platform

CCO at Look Up

Toulouse, France

About

SYNAPSE offers a complete and responsive restitution of the space situation and the operations carried out, in particular:

  • Multi-sensors sources and technologies data fusion. SYNAPSE ingests observations from all technologies (telescope, radar, passive RF, laser, on-ground & in-orbit) fusing them in order to provide the most accurate orbital information for a given object;

  • Multi-domain data fusion (orbital data, OSINT data) allowing the construction of an informed spatial situation;

  • Advanced taxonomy allowing the classification of orbital objects according to characteristics of defence interest (mission, operator, launch country, launch date, orbital regime, operator, etc.);

  • Historization of orbital positions, from the date of launch, allowing an exhaustive and time-based analysis of orbital behaviours;

  • Automatic detection of manoeuvres for all orbiting objects;

  • Historization of all manoeuvres allowing the establishment and analysis of the pattern of life of each orbiting object;

  • Anticipation of non-cooperative rendezvous and proximity operations (RPO), based on the proven manoeuvring capacity of space objects that could represent a threat.

Key features built into the platform include:

Catalogue:

  • Sensor Tasking via System Interface(s): From SYNAPSE, users can request new data from sensors modelled in the system.

  • Measurement Fusion: Automatic ingestion of sensor measurements, followed by multi-source orbit determination to produce a reliable reference orbit with quality indicators.

  • Orbit Catalogue Comparison: Automatic ingestion of orbits from various sources for comparison with reference orbits.

  • Space Object Intelligence Sheet: Catalogues managed by LOOK UP are supplemented with metadata detailing the object’s nature, mission, operator, and physical characteristics (non-exhaustive list).

Threat Characterization:

  • Pattern of Life: Historical orbital data and event tracking for objects. Detection of anomalies (including manoeuvres) in the object’s pattern of life, with characterization of these manoeuvres (categorisation, number, date, and magnitude).

  • Collision Risk Detection: Calculation of collision risks ("objects of interest vs. all") to identify and monitor the evolution of collision risks over time. This feature also supports targeted avoidance manoeuvre calculations.

  • Rendezvous and Proximity Operations: Anticipation and identification of objects capable of performing proximity operations within a realistic manoeuvring capability range and a 5-day time horizon (adjustable based on user needs).

  • Risky Re-entries: Module for detecting and analysing potential risky re-entries of objects in low Earth orbit.

Recognized Space Picture:

  • Global Visualization and Tracking of Situations of Interest: Enables operators to obtain a synthetic overview of the current space situation, focusing on events of interest.

  • Status of Space System Assets: From ground stations to objects in orbit.

  • Launch Tracking: A module for centralizing past launches and analysing upcoming launches.

  • Global Threat Level: For objects of interest, a summary of the threat characterization function.

  • Specific Analyses: Depending on LEO or GEO orbits, in-depth analyses of ongoing space events for objects of interest, with specialized reports and graphics.

  • Report Generation: Access to automatic notifications and reports regarding collision risks and proximity operations.

  • Space Action Planning: Based on threats and mission objectives, recommendations for manoeuvres to be executed by the satellite control centre.

  • Simulation of Space Situations for Advanced Analysis.

Space Support for Operations:

  • SATRAN: To determine overflight times of zones or points of interest for specific objects.

Analytics and reporting – Access to automatic notifications and reports about collision risk and proximity operations.
