Chartered on 16 June 1950 under Republic Act 525, Iligan is a highly urbanized coastal city on the northern edge of Mindanao — the Philippines' large southern island — long known as the Industrial Center of the South for its steel, cement, flour, and hydroelectric industries. The city sits at the meeting point of a working port, a productive agricultural hinterland, and one of the country's most biodiverse coastal-and-mountain landscapes — anchored by Maria Cristina Falls, the historic source of Mindanao's hydropower grid.
Across an 81,337-hectare territory of 44 barangays (the Philippines' smallest local-government unit; 14 coastal, 19 urban, 11 rural), Iligan runs a USD 1.44 billion local economy, ranked in 2024 as the second-fastest-growing among the Philippines' highly urbanized cities. It is one of the few Philippine local government units (LGUs) to have translated the Sustainable Development Goals into its own governance architecture through the 15 Iligan Development Goals (iDGs). The iDGs are the frame under which the city's environmental, economic, and social programs are planned, budgeted, and measured.
Iligan City is sponsored by the European Union Delegation to the Philippines and the Directorate General of International Partnerships (DG INTPA) and the EU funded Urban Development Technical Facility (UDTF) is acting as technical support.
