Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) is Uganda's national railway and marine transport corporation, established in 1977 under the Uganda Railways Corporation Act (Cap 331) following the break-up of the East African Railways Corporation. URC reports to the Ministry of Works and Transport and is headquartered in Kampala. Its network traces back to the original Uganda Railway, built between 1896 and 1901 and progressively extended into Uganda's interior through the 1920s to the 1960s.
URC's mission is to establish and manage reliable, efficient and safe railway and marine transport services in East Africa for sustainable economic development, with a vision to become a world-class railway and marine transport provider in the region. The Corporation manages a national railway network of approximately 1,266 km, of which around 269 km — the Kampala–Malaba line and its spurs to the inland marine facilities at Jinja Pier and Port Bell — is currently operational; the remaining sections are non-operational or under rehabilitation.
Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) is supported in this initiative by the European Union Delegation to Uganda and the Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA), with the EU-funded Urban Development Technical Facility (UDTF) acting as technical support.
