About

Gaziantep Büyükşehir Belediyesi has distinguished itself through pioneering smart city and zero-waste initiatives that integrate technology, sustainability, and efficient urban management. Among its most notable projects is “Atıkmatik,” a smart, card-operated recycling machine that rewards citizens financially for contributing recyclable waste. Complementing this initiative is the compost project, which transforms fruit and vegetable waste into organic fertilizer, reinforcing the city’s zero-waste vision.

Gaziantep has also made significant investments in digital infrastructure, establishing a 950-kilometer fiber network serving 32,000 users and approximately 100,000 homes and businesses across 12 regions, ensuring high-speed and uninterrupted internet access. In public transportation, 28 smart tram stops serving 1.5 million passengers monthly reduce waiting times by an average of 20 minutes per day. Integrated signalization systems adjust traffic lights according to tram locations, improving traffic flow and enhancing road safety.

The municipality manages 63 wired and 113 wireless signalized intersections through a centralized system, enabling real-time monitoring and rapid intervention. Over 900 excavation trucks are tracked digitally to ensure proper waste disposal, while the TEDES system operates 128 cameras citywide to detect red-light and speed violations.

Sustainability efforts extend to smart irrigation in the Botanical Park, achieving 15% water savings, and to the Water SCADA system, which remotely monitors reservoirs, pumping stations, and wells to reduce water loss. In energy management, real-time monitoring of 900 electricity meters in the Organized Industrial Zone has reduced losses from 4% to 0.5%. The municipality also hosts Türkiye’s largest solar carport at GASKİ and became the first public institution in the country to receive ISO 50001 Energy Management System Certification, reinforcing its leadership in sustainable urban innovation.
