About

Rome aims to become a Smart City by promoting the active participation of institutions, stakeholders, and citizens in the digital transformation of the city. The ultimate goal is to achieve the objectives outlined in the Rome Smart City Plan, a programmatic document that maps ongoing projects and provides guidelines for the city’s smart, sustainable future.

The Roma Smart City Lab Council is a key instrument for the initiative:

  • Participation & Collaboration: Encourages active involvement of institutions, stakeholders, and citizens in the digital transformation process.

  • Support & Input: Provides continuous advice and support to the governance bodies of the Rome Smart City Plan.

  • Strategic Involvement: Contributes to defining programs on:

    • Innovation

    • Smart Cities development

    • Ecological transition

    • Renewable energy communities

Rome is seeking innovative solutions to enhance citizen participation and improve city services through digital platforms. Potential projects may include:

  • Platforms for reporting issues in real time

  • Tools for submitting proposals or suggestions to local authorities

  • Systems that enable citizen engagement in public decision-making

The initiative is structured around 11 thematic areas to guide proposals:

  1. Smart Environment (Ambiente) – Sustainability, waste management, air quality

  2. Smart Energy (Energia) – Renewable energy, energy efficiency

  3. Smart Mobility (Mobilità) – Transport, traffic management, mobility services

  4. Smart Culture & Sport (Cultura e Sport) – Digital access to culture, sports innovation

  5. Smart Tourism (Turismo) – Tourist engagement, smart tourism infrastructure

  6. Smart Health (Sociale e Salute) – Digital health services, public health innovations

  7. Smart Security (Sicurezza) – Safety, surveillance, emergency management

  8. Startup Ecosystem (Sviluppo Economico) – Innovation hubs, support for startups

  9. Smart Learning (Educazione e scuole) – Digital education, schools’ technological development

  10. Smart Building (Trasformazione urbana) – Urban regeneration, intelligent infrastructure

  11. Smart Technology (Trasversale / Infrastrutture) – Cross-cutting tech solutions, city-wide digital infrastructure.
