The Human-in-the-Loop approach describes systems in which humans deliberately remain integrated into automated or AI-supported processes, or where human characteristics play a central role in the use of technology. Instead of fully automating decisions, humans take on important roles—such as monitoring, evaluating, correcting, or making the final decision. This helps increase the quality, transparency, and trustworthiness of digital systems.

At the same time, the approach also includes the active involvement of people already during the development of technological systems. Future users and stakeholders are involved early in design and development processes in order to better consider requirements, usage contexts, and potential impacts. This leads to technologies that are more closely aligned with human needs, capabilities, and responsibilities.

In this session, we will present concrete examples of how human interfaces can be designed so that people remain part of the decision-making and interaction process—both during development and in ongoing system operation. We will introduce new interaction approaches that illustrate the potential of human-centered design.
