bodegasaltanza.com/FUENMAYOR, SpainAbout
Altanza was founded in 1998 by a group of friends who shared the dream of producing classic, timeless Riojas with a modern twist. They built a state-of-the-art winery from scratch in the heart of Rioja Alta, Fuenmayor, and they also acquired old vineyards and land to plant their own vines. The first two people hired to work at Altanza were the winemaker and the chef. This underscores how important food pairing is for Altanza wines. The essence of the wines rests on three main pillars: 1. Tempranillo as the backbone: All red wines are made 100% with this variety. Tempranillo is elegant, velvety, versatile, and has great aging potential both in oak barrels and in the bottle. 2. Own vineyards: About 70% to 75% of the wines are made with grapes from own vineyards, which is rare for a medium-sized winery in this region where most must buy grapes. This ensures quality consistency over time and allows the wines to have their own unique character and personality. Altanza owns a total of 174 hectares (162 ha of Tempranillo and 12 ha of Sauvignon Blanc). 3. French Oak devotion: 98% of the barrels are French oak, which enhances the fruity and elegant profile of the Tempranillo wines and respects the characteristics imparted by the terroir (around 7,000 barrels). Other important facts about us: • The use of own yeast for fermentation to maintain a unique personality in the wines. • A strong focus on aged wines, with the youngest red wine aged for 6 months in oak. There are four Altanza Reserva wines in total. • Altanza is one of the top and largest producers of Sauvignon Blanc in DOCa Rioja.
