White Garnacha from Rioja: A Rediscovered Heritage

On the Origin of the Grape: White Garnacha (Garnacha Blanca) is the genetic white-skinned sibling of the renowned Red Garnacha. It is believed to have originated as a natural mutation in the vineyards of northeastern Spain

In Rioja: While Garnacha Blanca has ancient roots in the region, it was historically a minority player, often used in small percentages to add body and aroma to white blends. For decades, it was overshadowed by the dominant Viura. However, a modern renaissance is underway. A new generation of winemakers, seeking more expressive and textured whites, is championing old-vine Garnacha Blanca vineyards.

These vines, often struggling in poor, rocky soils at higher altitudes, produce low yields of intensely concentrated grapes. The resulting wines are the soul of modern white Rioja: full-bodied, with a distinctive oily texture and aromas of white stone fruit, fennel, herbs, and citrus, often supported by a vibrant mineral core. They can be enjoyed young for their freshness or aged to develop remarkable complexity, proving that Garnacha Blanca is not just a part of Rioja's past, but a cornerstone of its exciting future.
