About

The Interuniversity Research Institute for Molecular Recognition and Technological Development (IDM) is a joint research institute of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) and the Universitat de València (UV). It brings together interdisciplinary teams covering chemistry, pharmacy, biomedicine, electronic engineering and materials science to turn fundamental research into applied technologies with real-world impact.

IDM's research groups work across a broad range of fields, including:

  • Health & biomedicine: cancer biomarkers and precision oncology, drug delivery systems, biomedical devices and wearables, point-of-care diagnostics including lateral flow assays, and inflammation research.

  • Sensing & materials: nanomaterials, biosensors, smart materials, functional printed sensorics.

  • Environment & sustainability: renewable energy and energy management, life cycle assessment, water quality, circular economy.

  • Agri-food: sustainable agrotech solutions for food security and productive efficiency — nanomaterials for encapsulation or controlled release of biopesticides, lateral-flow strips and microarrays for real-time detection of phytosanitary residues.

  • Analytical chemistry: chemometric modelling and machine learning (PCA, PLS, QSAR, ANN) for chiral separations and bioanalysis, with rigorous model validation.

Technology transfer and business collaboration are led by IDM's Scientific Unit for Business Innovation (UCIE-IDM), which manages IP protection, licensing, spin-off creation and partnerships with companies and research organizations across Europe and beyond.

IDM is actively looking for partners for MSCA Doctoral Networks, Postdoctoral Fellowships and Staff Exchanges — both academic institutions to join as beneficiaries in joint doctoral training, and non-academic organisations (companies, hospitals, technology centres) able to host secondments or co-supervise Industrial Doctorates, particularly in health, agrotech, renewable energy, sensing/electronics, and structural/environmental engineering.
