About
The Institute of Geophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was founded in December 1960 in Kyiv, uniting the Geophysical Laboratory and Magnetic Station of the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian Republic, as well as the geophysical divisions and stations in the Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources of the Academy and the Section of Seismology to cooperate scientists in the fields of pure, field and applied geophysics. The founder and first Director of the Institute (1960-1976) was the geophysicist Serafim Subbotin, a great contributor to the mainstream of geophysics in Ukraine. The leading geophysicists of those times joined the Institute. To commemorate Academician S.I. Subbotin, the Institute was named after him in 1978, and in 1981, a memorial plaque was opened, sculpting a bust of Subbotin. Since 1998, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine held Subbotin's Research Fellowship.
