The University of Reading is a research intensive university with a substantial reputation for research excellence. Most recent results of the UK-wide Research Excellence Framework exercise (REF) conducted in 2021 to assess research quality, revealed 46% of University of Reading research is internationally excellent, 40% research is classed as world-leading and 13% research is recognised internationally. With 23,000 students and nearly 4,500 staff from over 160 countries, having campuses in Malaysia and South Africa, as well as the NUIST Reading Academy in China, the University has a very international environment. Reading has a strong track record of working in European projects and received awards for >200 EU Projects across Framework Programmes resulting in >€93M EU Contribution. It is home to excellence and frontier research and has received ERC Starting, Consolidator, Advanced, Synergy and Proof of Concept awards; as well as numerous Marie Skłodowska Curie actions and collaborative Cluster grants.
Research at the University of Reading aims to solve some of the biggest problems facing people today, based on four themes: Agriculture, Food and Health; Environment; Heritage and Creativity; and Prosperity and Resilience. Working across continents and disciplines, our researchers explore ways to tackle climate change, improve human health, provide food security and understand human culture.
