Health Systems Researcher | AI in Healthcare, Mental Health, Trauma & Fragile Health Systems

Umar Abba Aja

Health Systems Researcher | MHA Graduate | AI in Healthcare & Implementation Science at Aston University

Maiduguri, Nigeria

About

I am a health systems researcher with training in Biotechnology (BSc Hons) and Hospital Administration (MHA, First Division with Honours). My research focuses on AI-enabled digital health systems, mental health, trauma, and health system resilience in fragile and conflict-affected settings.

My work sits at the intersection of:

Artificial intelligence in healthcare

Digital health governance and implementation science

Mental health and psychosocial wellbeing

Trauma, stress, and pain-related health outcomes

Health systems strengthening in humanitarian and low-resource contexts

I have experience in mixed-methods research, systematic and scoping reviews, monitoring and evaluation, and public health research. My master’s dissertation developed a PRISMA-based systematic review and conceptual framework on barriers to AI integration in healthcare systems.

I am particularly interested in how AI and digital health innovations can be ethically implemented to improve mental health, trauma care, and health system performance in fragile environments, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Value to Collaborations

I contribute expertise in health systems research, implementation science, and evidence synthesis, combined with contextual understanding of fragile and conflict-affected health systems in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This allows me to support the design, implementation, and evaluation of AI-enabled digital health and mental health interventions, ensuring that research is both scientifically rigorous and contextually applicable in real-world low-resource and humanitarian settings.
