Plant Ecologist | Global Change Biologist | Expert in Functional Traits, Phenology, and Forest Resilience Across Biomes

Catherine Hulshof

Associate Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University

About

My research program focuses on how plant functional traits and phenology mediate ecosystem responses to climate across tropical and temperate mountains. My work integrates long-term field studies, remote sensing, and trait-based sampling to understand forest dynamics along gradients of water availability and temperature.

I am seeking collaboration to advance comparative research on forest dynamics and phenological adaptation across biogeographic boundaries. My current projects span tropical dry and rainforests in Costa Rica, and temperate deciduous forests in the Appalachian Mountains.

I bring:

  • Expertise in plant functional ecology, phenology, and trait–climate-soil relationships from tropical and temperate systems

  • Experience leading and co-developing international field and sensor networks

  • Strong quantitative and data-science skills (R, spatial analysis, remote sensing, open and reproducible workflows).

  • A creative, interdisciplinary approach linking ecology, design, and data visualization to explore resilience and adaptation in a changing climate.

I'm looking for:

  • co-PI to develop NSF, ERC or other large collaborative grant proposal related to temperate and tropical phenology, automated biodiversity monitoring in tropical forests, or other intersecting research

  • collaboration opportunities in Spain

  • general opportunities to collaborate on projects that integrate field observations, trait data, and phenological time series to reveal how species and ecosystems synchronize or decouple their functioning under climate variability across latitudes.
