This approach utilizes high-resolution microscopy techniques to evaluate the efficacy and mechanism of action of nanomaterials in combating biofilms. By employing methods such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM), researchers can directly visualize the interaction between engineered nanomaterials and the complex structure of biofilms.

These techniques provide critical insights into:

Nanomaterial localization: Observing how and where particles penetrate the biofilm matrix.

Structural damage: Assessing physical disruption to the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) and bacterial cells.

Anti-biofilm activity: Quantifying the reduction in biofilm biomass and viability.

This detailed analysis is fundamental for developing targeted and effective nanomaterial-based strategies to prevent and eradicate persistent biofilm-related infections and contaminations.
