Settlement geography
About
There hasn't been any in-depth research on the settlement geography of the medieval Hungarian Kingdom yet. English/French/German settlement researchers did this decades ago (starting in the 1960s). There are lots of examples that can help with the research. However, the conditions and historical processes in the Carpathian Basin are unique and differ from those in Western Europe.
The topic of my doctoral research was the methodology of the settlement geography reconstruction of the central part of the Carpathian Basin (Danube-Tisza Intefluve Region). Thanks to my museum background, I used archaeological, geoinformatics, remote sensing, and IT tools in my work. I have extensive experience in using historical sources, maps, and archaeological methods. In addition, I became familiar with the settlement geography sources and literature of the Carpathian Basin.
I would like to extend my research to the Carpathian Basin. My goal is to form a picture of the spatial order of medieval settlements and their layout characteristics. I would like to examine whether there is any regularity in the location/distribution of individual settlement types.
The aim of my research is, on the one hand, to create a monographic work that would present the morphological types, distribution, and development of medieval settlements in the Carpathian Basin. I have extensive experience in performing spatial analyses and creating maps and diagrams. For this reason, I would like to fill this work with my own analyses, diagrams, and maps.
On the other hand, my goal is to create a database that will be an online geographic information system.
