About
The group “Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Lab (BMRL)” led by Dr. María Luisa García-Martín at the Instituto de Investigación Biomédica de Málaga y Plataforma en Nanomedicina (IBIMA-Plataforma BIONAND) in Malaga (Spain) is interested in hosting a Marie Curie Fellowship. 2 Marie Skłodowska-Curie projects are offered to be supervised by Dr. García-Martín.
Dr. García-Martín has been working in the field of Magnetic Resonance applied to biomedical research since the beginning of her scientific career, and more recently, she has actively expanded her research activity into the field of nanomedicine. She got her Ph.D. at the "Alberto Sols" Biomedical Research Institute (CSIC/UAM) in Madrid. During this period, she complemented her training with short stays in several institutions in Europe and the United States. After her Ph.D., Dr. García-Martín joined, as a Research Associate, the University of Arizona's Cancer Center, where she developed her scientific activity for the next three years until she returned to the Biomedical Research Institute in Madrid as a "Ramón y Cajal" researcher. During this period, her work focused on the characterization of the tumor microenvironment using multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy. In 2008, she undertook a position as Clinical Scientist to work on the implementation of advanced MRI techniques for the early detection of cancer, in particular prostate cancer. In 2011, she joined the Andalusian Center for Nanomedicine and Biotechnology (BIONAND) in Málaga as Group Leader of the Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Lab. BIONAND is currently part of the Instituto de Investigación Biomédica de Málaga y Plataforma en Nanomedicina (IBIMA – Plataforma BIONAND), a Health Research Institute accredited by the Carlos III Health Institute, where Dr. García-Martín continues to lead the Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Lab and also coordinates the Nondiagnostics Area. Additionally, she is the head of the NanoImaging Unit, a multimodal imaging platform accredited as a Singular Scientific and Technological Infrastructure (ICTS) by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation as an independent node of distributed ICTS NANBIOSIS. Also, from 2014 to 2019, she held the position of Scientific Deputy Director of BIONAND. Her research is focused on: i) the development of magnetic nanoparticles and other nanosystems for cancer theranostics; ii) the study of the tumor microenvironment in preclinical tumor models, mainly malignant brain tumors; iii) the identification of metabolic biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases using NMR metabolomics. She has participated in 22 publicly-funded research projects, leading 9 of them, and is the author of 76 scientific articles, 3 book chapters, and has edited the book "Preclinical MRI: methods and protocols" for the series "Methods in Molecular Biology", by Springer Nature.
