About

The Institute of Geography (IGAR), part of the Romanian Academy, is the leading centre for fundamental and applied geographical research in Romania. Headquartered in Bucharest, with branches in Cluj-Napoca and Iași, it conducts integrated studies in geomorphology, hydrology, climatology, biogeography, GIS, human and environmental geography.
Its research focuses on the interactions between natural, biotic, and socio-economic systems and their spatial dynamics under global environmental change.

IGAR has strong expertise in GIS-based hazard analysis, vulnerability assessment, and regional development studies, contributing to numerous national and international projects (FP6, FP7, Horizon 2020). It collaborates with global programmes such as UNESCO-IHP, MAB, and Future Earth.

The Institute coordinates doctoral research and annually hosts the International Summer School on Natural Hazards and Sustainable Development at its Pătârlagele Research Station.

Founded in 1944, IGAR has been part of the Romanian Academy since 1990 and continues to promote integrated, interdisciplinary research supporting environmental protection, territorial planning, and sustainable regional development.
